Dr Anthony W Griffin commenced his Private Radiology Practice, (known as "Woden Radiology Service") in Adelaide House Woden Canberra on the 10th of May 1976, having resigned his post as Staff Specialist at RPAH, to return to Canberra.
The Practice prospered and a small branch was opened at The Kippax Health Centre in Belconnen. During his years in private practice, Dr Griffin was also the Consultant Radiologist to Norfolk Island Hospital, providing a pro bono service.
On the 12th of September 1983 the practice moved to new purpose built premises in Corinna Chambers, Corinna St Woden. Dr Griffin was the prime force behind the Corinna Chambers development, a multidisciplinary specialist centre and the first of its type in Canberra. This practice also provided VMO services to The Royal Canberra Hospital, The Woden Valley Hospital, Calvary Hospital and the First Camp Hospital at Duntroon.
This Private Radiology Service had to its credit a number of firsts:
- The first private OPG machine in a Canberra radiology practice.
- The first film screen mammography.
- The first private CT scanner in Canberra (in partnership with ACT X-Ray) in 1985.
- The first MRI scanner for Canberra and SE NSW in 1991 at Deakin.
- The first private practice in the ACT to provide staff with uniforms.
More doctors joined the growing practice, including Dr Colin Gurner (a retired Medical Major General) who worked with Dr Griffin in Corinna Chambers from 1985 until 1991. Dr Howard Galloway joined the practice in 1991; Dr Jeremy Price in 1993; Dr Ian Stewart in 1995; and, Dr Malcolm Thomson in 2001.
The Practice grew opening rooms in the Canberra Specialist Centre, Deakin in 1991 to house the MRI scanner. The practice also expanded to Tuggeranong to cater for the growing population in southern Canberra. In view of this expansion the Practice name was changed to National Capital Diagnostic Imaging (NCDI). The Civic rooms opened in 2001 incorporating Dr Sullivan & Dr Lomas' Turner Imaging practice.
Dr Griffin retired from practice in April 1999. NCDI has continued as one of the leading private Radiology companies in Canberra becoming part of a larger group - the I-MED Network. This network provides expertise, financial backing and other resources to facilitate NCDI's growth.
Dr David McKenna and Dr Rauf Yousaf joined NCDI in early 2008 and Dr Anusha Naidoo in April 2009.
NCDI continues to use state of the art imaging equipment to provide high quality medical imaging at four sites across Canberra with a team of 9 experienced doctors and over 80 technical and administrative staff. NCDI has a proud history of serving the ACT and surrounding regional areas, including Cooma, Queanbeyan, Goulburn, and the South Coast for over 30 years!
